I feel like not much time passed after I left The Church (but stayed Christian) before a lot of fundamental rules and the whole vibe of Catholicism in the U.S. got really diluted. Somewhere just before John Paul II's passing, doctrine got lazy. The Church as a governing body and not just a title went away. I think culture shifted and instead of staying immovable like a rock, The Church shifted too.
