WASHINGTON DC (GLOB)
According to Jonathan Swan Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and John Curtis of Utah were all opposed to the nomination of Gaetz.
This makes me optimistic for the future. Perhaps we will not have An Emperor’s New Clothes president after all. It will be interesting to watch these folks when they come up for reelection. My guess is their states will support them.
Who are these intrepid souls who dare spit in the eye of Trump?
Murkowski will come up for reelection in 2028. The senator from Alaska is a moderate known for working across party lines. Trump did not support her in her 2022 reelection bid.
Collins will come for reelection in 2026. The senator from Maine is also known as a moderate willing to work across party lines. Trump did not formally endorse Collins in 2020. She has maintained an independent stance on various issues which has contributed to some distance.
McConnell is the longest serving Senate Republican leader in history, having served since 1985. He will come up for reelection in 2026. Trump endorsed him in 2020. However post January 6th their relationship has become strained.
Curtis is not yet a senator, but won the 2024 election and will be a senator from Utah in 2025. He will be up for reelection in 2030. Curtis won a special election in 2017 to the House of Representatives. Curtis does not seem to have been on Trump’s radar. He is considered to be a mainstream Republican though he has expressed moderate or pragmatic views on issues like climate change.
